How to Find Your Ring Size at Home (Free Printable Method)
Posted on by testman

Ring size is the one measurement that cannot be corrected later without cutting the band, and in silver it matters even more because some designs cannot be resized at all. Measuring at home is reliable if the timing and the method are right, and unreliable if the ring is measured cold or on the wrong finger.

What is the most accurate home method?

Measure the internal diameter of a ring that already fits.

Take a ring that fits the intended finger and lay it on a ruler, measuring the inside across the centre in millimetres. Compare that number with a ring size chart to find the size. This method uses the metal itself as the gauge, so it avoids the errors that come from wrapping paper or string around the finger.

The alternative is a printable chart: cut a strip, wrap it around the base of the finger, mark where the strip overlaps, and measure the length in millimetres to get the circumference. Both methods work, but the existing-ring method is less sensitive to how tightly the strip is pulled.

When should you measure?

At the end of the day, at room temperature, and never when the hands are cold.

Fingers are smallest in the morning and after exposure to cold, and largest in the evening and in warm weather. Measuring cold hands can lead to a ring that is half a size too small, which is uncomfortable in summer and difficult to resize in a stone-set band.

Avoid measuring after exercise, when the fingers may be swollen, and avoid measuring immediately after a large meal or in extreme heat.

Which finger and which hand?

Measure the exact finger and hand the ring is for.

Sizes differ between the left and right hand, and between fingers, by up to a full size. The dominant hand is usually slightly larger, and the ring finger is typically smaller than the index finger on the same hand.

If the ring will be worn on a different hand in summer, measure both and choose the larger size or a design that can be resized.

The knuckle check

The ring must pass over the knuckle comfortably, not just fit the base of the finger.

A finger with a prominent knuckle needs a size that passes the joint and still sits securely at the base. If the same size must do both, choose the larger size and consider a slightly wider band, which sits more stably than a thin one.

For a ring that will be worn over a swollen knuckle, a hinged or open design is more practical than forcing a closed band.

Method Accuracy Best for Watch for
Existing ring, internal diameter High Replacing a ring that fits Use the inside measurement, not the outside
Printable strip, circumference Good First ring, gift sizing Do not pull the strip tight
String or paper Moderate Quick estimate Stretches; measure twice
Jeweller’s ring gauge Highest Valuable or rigid designs Visit at normal hand temperature

How do width and fit change the size?

A wider band and a comfort fit both feel about half a size tighter.

A 6 mm band covers more of the finger than a 2 mm band and feels tighter at the same circumference, and a comfort-fit interior contacts the finger at the centre rather than the edges, which also changes the feel. When choosing between two sizes for a wide or comfort-fit ring, take the larger.

The reverse applies to very thin stacking rings, which can feel slightly loose; they are usually sized to the same measurement as a standard band because they are worn in a stack.

Converting between systems

Use one system as the source of truth and convert only at the end.

US sizes, UK letters, European circumference numbers and Japanese sizes do not convert neatly, and rounding between them creates errors of half a size or more. Measure in millimetres, then look up the corresponding size in the chart used by the retailer you are buying from.

If you are buying internationally, ask the retailer for the internal diameter in millimetres rather than a size number, because the diameter is unambiguous. Our sizing guides include the circumference and diameter chart.

Measuring for a gift

Borrow a ring that fits the recipient and measure its internal diameter.

This avoids guesswork and is discreet. If borrowing is impossible, measure a ring from the same finger of a close relative with a similar build, or choose a design that can be resized. For full eternity bands and other styles that cannot be resized, a gift should be confirmed with a measurement rather than estimated.

FAQ

How do I measure my ring size at home?

Measure the internal diameter of a ring that already fits, in millimetres, and compare it with a size chart. Alternatively, wrap a printable strip around the base of the finger and measure the circumference. Measure at room temperature and check the knuckle.

Does ring size change during the day?

Yes. Fingers are smallest in the morning and in the cold, and largest in the evening and in warm weather, so the same finger can vary by half a size. Measure at normal room temperature, ideally in the late afternoon.

Should I size up for a wide band?

Yes. A wider band covers more of the finger and feels tighter at the same circumference, and a comfort fit also feels about half a size tighter. If you are between sizes on a wide or comfort-fit ring, choose the larger one.

How accurate is the string method?

It is a reasonable estimate but the least accurate, because string stretches and the tension changes the measurement. If you use it, measure twice and compare with the internal-diameter method before ordering.
