What is an eternity ring?

A ring set with a continuous line of stones, usually diamonds, around the band.

The design symbolises continuity, which is why it is common for anniversaries and as a companion to a wedding set. The stones are usually the same size and grade, set in a row, and the band is matched to the wearer’s other rings.

In silver, eternity rings keep the price accessible and allow a wider band to be worn comfortably. The main compromises are stone security and resizing, both of which depend on the setting style rather than on the metal.

Full, half and channel set: the differences that matter

Full eternity covers the whole band; half covers the visible top; channel set recesses the stones between two rails.

A full eternity looks the same from every angle but cannot be resized and is harder to keep clean, because the stones continue around the palm side where they contact the finger. A half eternity sets stones across the top only, leaving a plain section underneath — it can usually be resized and is more comfortable for daily wear.

A channel setting protects the stones between two metal rails, which reduces snagging and keeps the line clean. It uses more metal and can hide a little of the stone, but it is the most practical for daily wear.

How do the styles wear over time?

Stones on the palm side wear fastest, which is why half designs last longer.

A full eternity exposes stones to constant contact with the finger and with whatever the hand touches. Over years, the stones and the metal around them wear, and the ring may need re-polishing or re-setting. A half eternity keeps the stones on the visible top and the plain metal against the finger, which spreads the wear across the band.

Channel settings reduce stone loss because the rails protect the girdles, while prong settings expose more of the stone and require periodic tightening.

Sizing and resizing limits

Size a full eternity correctly the first time; there is no second chance.

Because the stones continue around the band, resizing a full eternity means removing stones, cutting the band, re-soldering and re-setting — a job that often costs more than the ring. A half eternity can usually be resized within a size or two, because the plain section gives the jeweller room to work.

This makes the ring sizing method more important for eternity rings than for any other style, and it is worth measuring at more than one time of day before ordering.

Comfort and fit

A comfort-fit interior and a modest width make an eternity band wearable all day.

Stones set around the inside of the band press against the finger, so a full eternity feels different from a plain band even at the same size. A comfort-fit interior helps, and a width of 2–3 mm is the practical range for daily wear.

If the ring will be stacked with an engagement ring or a wedding band, test the set together, since the extra width changes how the stack sits on the finger.

Metal and plating considerations

Sterling silver works well for eternity bands; plating adds tarnish resistance.

Rhodium plating brightens the setting and slows tarnish, which is useful on a band with many small stones. The plating wears at the edges and the palm side first, and re-plating is routine. For sensitive skin, confirm that the alloy and plating are nickel-free; coating specifications such as ASTM B700 describe the finish, and fineness terminology follows the CIBJO Blue Book.

Care and cleaning

Clean the stones and the gaps where residue collects, and check the settings.
