How to Measure Your Wrist for a Silver Bracelet
925 sterling silver jewellery, set with lab grown diamonds and made in our own Shenzhen workshop.

Bracelet sizing has one measurement that most guides omit: the hand. A chain bracelet only has to fit the wrist, but a bangle must pass over the widest part of the hand, and that dimension — not the wrist — decides whether a rigid bracelet can be worn at all.
How do you measure your wrist?
Wrap a flexible tape around the wrist bone and note the snug measurement.
Measure just below the wrist bone, where a bracelet naturally sits, and keep the tape snug but not tight. Note the number in centimetres; this is your wrist circumference.
If you do not have a tape measure, use a strip of paper or a piece of string, mark the overlap and measure the length against a ruler. Measure twice, because the tension changes the result.
How much allowance do you add?
Add 1–2 cm for comfort, more for bangles.
The allowance is what makes a bracelet comfortable: a chain bracelet that matches the wrist exactly sits against the skin and leaves no room to move. As a starting point, add about 1 cm for a close-fitting chain, 1.5–2 cm for a relaxed fit, and check the closure type as well, since a larger clasp adds effective length.
For a bangle, the limiting measurement is the hand, not the wrist: measure around the widest part of the hand with the thumb tucked towards the palm, and choose a bangle that passes over that measurement with at least 1 cm of clearance.
| Style | Measure | Allowance | Notes |
|---|---|---|---|
| Chain bracelet | Wrist | 1–1.5 cm | Extender gives adjustment |
| Tennis bracelet | Wrist | 1–1.5 cm | Fixed length; size accurately |
| Charm bracelet | Wrist | 1.5–2 cm | Charms add weight and bulk |
| Rigid bangle | Hand (widest point) | 1–1.5 cm over the hand | Must pass over the knuckles |
| Hinged bangle | Wrist | 1–1.5 cm | Opens, so easier to fit |

Measuring the hand for bangles
Bring the thumb and fingers together and measure around the widest part.
The hand measurement is usually 2–3 cm larger than the wrist, and it is the dimension that decides whether a rigid bangle will go on. Measure with the hand relaxed and the thumb tucked, at the widest point across the knuckles.
A hinged bangle removes this constraint because it opens; it only needs to fit the wrist comfortably.
When should you measure?
At room temperature, at the end of the day, and on the correct hand.
Wrists swell in heat and after activity, and they are smaller in the morning and in the cold. Measure when the hand is at normal temperature, and use the same hand the bracelet will be worn on, since the dominant wrist is often slightly larger.
Avoid measuring immediately after exercise or in very hot or cold conditions.
Converting sizes and using a chart
Work in centimetres, then convert only at the end.
Bracelet sizes are sold in centimetres, inches or letter sizes depending on the retailer, and rounding between systems creates errors. Measure in centimetres, add the allowance, and then look up the corresponding size on the retailer’s chart.
If you are buying internationally, ask for the finished length in millimetres and, for chain styles, whether an extender is included. Our sizing guides include the wrist chart.
Measuring for a gift
Borrow a bracelet that fits and measure its total length.
Lay the bracelet flat and measure end to end including the clasp; that number is the finished length you should order. If borrowing is impossible, a chain bracelet with an extender is the safer gift, because it accommodates a range of wrists.
FAQ
How do I measure my wrist for a bracelet?
Wrap a flexible tape around the wrist just below the wrist bone, keep it snug, and note the measurement. Add 1–1.5 cm for a comfortable chain bracelet, or more for a relaxed fit or a charm bracelet.
Should I add length to my wrist measurement?
Yes. A bracelet that matches the wrist exactly sits tight against the skin. Add about 1 cm for a close fit and 1.5–2 cm for a relaxed fit, and remember that a larger clasp adds effective length.
How do I size a bangle?
Measure the widest part of the hand with the thumb tucked towards the palm, and choose a bangle that passes over that measurement with at least 1 cm of clearance. A hinged bangle only needs to fit the wrist.
What is the average bracelet length?
Most women’s chain bracelets are sold around 17–19 cm and men’s around 20–22 cm, but the correct length depends on your wrist measurement plus the allowance rather than on a standard size. Always measure before ordering a fixed-length design.
